Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Sparks Controversy with Claims About Diet and Mental Health

During the Trump administration's initiative to advocate for healthy eating, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has gone beyond his slogan urging individuals to "eat real food" to prevent illnesses. In his recent speeches and podcast appearances, the U.S. health secretary has asserted that diet can "cure" conditions such as schizophrenia and diabetes, and enable individuals to overcome bipolar disorder diagnoses. Experts argue that these statements exaggerate the current understanding of the beneficial role that diet can play in illness management.

"Food is medicine, and you can heal yourself with a good diet," Kennedy stated on comedian Theo Von's "This Past Weekend" podcast in February. This assertion aligns with a concept promoted by Kennedy's "Make America Healthy Again" supporters, which has garnered some bipartisan backing: the need for greater emphasis on the impact of food on health.

While scientists acknowledge that diet can influence certain diseases and assist in their treatment, public health advocates argue that Kennedy's statements misrepresent scientific research, a pattern he has also applied to vaccine science, which has angered many healthcare professionals. Kayla Hancock, director of a public health project at the advocacy group Protect Our Care, described Kennedy's approach as "incredibly careless and irresponsible."

Dr. Theresa Miskimen Rivera, president of the American Psychiatric Association, expressed concern that such rhetoric might lead patients to self-treat with diet alone. "There is always a risk that individuals may misinterpret this hope as a reason to forego medication or treatment, believing that they only need to follow a diet," Rivera noted.

Kennedy Exaggerates Evidence on Diet and Mental Health Disorders

In a speech in early February at the Tennessee Capitol, Kennedy referenced research by Dr. Christopher Palmer, a Harvard Medical School researcher, who in 2019 wrote about two schizophrenia patients who saw symptom remission after adhering to a high-fat, low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet. Kennedy claimed that Palmer had "cured schizophrenia using keto diets," a statement Palmer later refuted, emphasizing the importance of precise language and preferring the term "remission."

During the same speech and on Joe Rogan's podcast, Kennedy mentioned studies where individuals "lose their bipolar diagnosis by changing their diet," claiming a significant paper would soon be released on the subject. Kennedy's spokesman, Andrew Nixon, mentioned that these comments referred to a "growing body of research," including a UCLA study examining the effects of a ketogenic diet on teenagers with bipolar disorder, which is still recruiting participants and won't conclude until March 2027.

Rivera from the American Psychiatric Association criticized Kennedy's claims as overstating the evidence. She pointed out that studies investigating the ketogenic diet's effects on mental health have been small or anecdotal, with many lacking a control group of patients on a standard diet. "At this stage, it's premature to draw definitive conclusions," Rivera stated. "There isn't enough evidence to recommend any specific diet as a standalone treatment without medications like antipsychotics or mood stabilizers."

Palmer acknowledged that research into the effects of ketogenic and other diets on psychiatric disorders is advancing, with 20 controlled clinical trials currently underway. He expressed enthusiasm for diet as a potential therapy for severe psychiatric disorders but advised patients to consult their doctors before making any changes. "I urge patients: Do not discontinue your medication without professional guidance," he cautioned. "Avoid trying a ketogenic diet on your own as a treatment for schizophrenia or bipolar disorder."

Debate Over Kennedy's Claims on Diabetes

Kennedy's assertion on Von's podcast that "most diabetes can be cured through diet" has also drawn scrutiny, with some experts arguing that he overstated dietary influence. Dr. Willa Hsueh, an endocrinologist at Ohio State University, explained that Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune condition, cannot be cured by diet alone. While a healthy diet and exercise are crucial for managing Type 2 diabetes, they may not be sufficient to reverse the condition entirely.

"The secretary is correct that diet can be effective," Hsueh noted. "However, it is uncommon for individuals to cure themselves solely through dietary changes."

Conversely, some experts defended Kennedy's remarks regarding the disease affecting 40 million Americans. Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, a cardiologist and director of the Food is Medicine Institute at Tufts University, stated that a healthy diet can help "most individuals" with Type 2 diabetes to lower blood sugar levels, reverse symptoms, and potentially cease medication. "Whether you label it a cure or remission is a matter of medical terminology," Mozaffarian explained.

While he acknowledged that Kennedy might not always be precise in his language, he welcomed the increased focus on diet's role in combating chronic diseases. "I'd rather exaggerate to draw attention and action than continue the current situation, where millions of Americans suffer from diet-related illnesses," Mozaffarian stated.

Supporters of MAHA Advocate for Increased Focus on Nutrition

Mark Gorton, president of the Kennedy-aligned MAHA Institute, noted that he was not familiar with the studies Kennedy mentioned but emphasized that nutrition has been "an extremely overlooked area in our medical system for decades." He argued for prioritizing diet and returning to healthier living instead of relying solely on long-term medication for sick individuals.

Kody Green, a mental health advocate living with schizophrenia, expressed support for healthy eating but emphasized the necessity of psychiatric medications. He voiced concerns that Kennedy's comments might discourage schizophrenia patients from pursuing already stigmatized medications. "While food may help some individuals, schizophrenia is a serious mental illness," Green remarked. "Making such claims without sufficient research can pose significant risks to my community."
